I was having my morning coffee while editing my memoirs when a nostalgic moment presented a detour. I left the paper and ink and stepped over into the rugged terrain of coal dirt and the beauty of a mountain filled with lush green trees and wildflowers. I can find a place to sit down anywhere among these surroundings.

That cliff! That’s where I sat down beneath the Rhododendron shrubs. That is the state flower of West Virginia. In spring there appears gorgeous wild flowers, toadstools, and thick green moss carpets the floor around the Rhododendron.

When Daddy bought us a television, I was in third grade. When he began to install the antenna, he needed lots of wire because he found a way to bring the wire up the cliff and stretch it up to the top of a tree. Finally, we had a good picture and now we had three channels instead of one. Those were the days when the stations signed off at midnight. And as I sit beneath my hideaway, Momma is in the house and possibly stirring up a pitcher of homemade Lemonade. Cold and refreshing with rings of the Lemon full of juicy pulp floating in the ice. Momma knew how to bring joy to her family’s heart.

So, here I am again wandering over memory lane. Recalling and embracing the beautiful experiences of my mountain home, once again.

And as the trees and shrubs of the mountains sway in rhythm to the wind, they become like windchimes to lead me back once again. Oh, the secrets that are kept there where once we roamed freely across the hills in our mountain
