When Seasons Change...
The aroma of Banana nut bread has filled my kitchen and mingled with the Black Silk brew of Folgers. An intense reminder of the changing season. Fall has arrived and brought vivid reminders of the beauty that accompanies the results that will be on display. Making molasses and apple butter and gathering pumpkins will be offered. I began clearing the veggie patch of tomato and pepper plants and bean vines, each of them have made beautiful contributions to my meals this year an

From a Diamond to a Pearl and a 40-cent coupon
. October. A fall morning. And I was in my kitchen before six o’clock preparing space on the counter to roll out fried pie dough. Usually there are various kinds of randomly placed items to get out of the way…pens, note pad, sticky notes, the bread box. In the process there was an overlooked coupon that I had not placed in my billfold. I picked that up, checked the expiration date which was still good. So got the billfold out, and before placing the coupon behind the coup

My Endearing Appalachia...Something from Home
It had to be said. It was important that I document my memoir. My love of my childhood home was worthy to be noted and the evidence was slipping away. First, the demand for coal was decreasing. Then the destructive weather had caused flooding on two separate occasions. The floods and the economic decline gave reason to families for moving away. Gathering Memories Some years had passed and I needed to visit the place of my childhood and gather and re-live the memories. Two ro

Doo Wops, Bobby socks, pop beads and Record hops
…and an old ’52 Ford pickup truck. Crossed telephone lines. One summer night. Listening to the radio as the deejay took requests and dedications for songs --- We didn’t know it then, but we were given a life sentence to serve together and it began in ’64. Our story begins from a phone call in the house on the side of the mountain. There wasn’t even a rotary dial on the phone I was using, in fact, there were no push buttons either. Nor was a private phone line available in the

All Things Food
I discovered that previous photos of my kitchen, culinary works should have a page of their own. I have, for over 60 years, prepared my families' meals from scratch. And this requires regular shopping and selecting food items that are interchangeable for a variety of dishes. Preparing for Chicken Burritos Sauteed sweet orange, red and yellow peppers and purple onions. And these will go on the chicken and then be topped by Guacamole, Picante sauce and sour cream. Mom's kitche
